West Coast City Girl Meets Her Southern Prince Charming

About the Bride

From the time Karly began to speak and express herself, those around her knew that she was one-of-a-kind! Born and raised in San Francisco, she had a very busy childhood that included ice-skating, ballet, lyrical, and tap dancing, and playing volleyball. Karly has always been a fearless, focused, and independent thinker, which was evident when she applied for her first job (and got it) as a 7th grader in middle school. She actually drafted a proposal to create a step team at her school and the administrator not only loved the proposal, but also hired Karly as the step team instructor. She had no idea she would be receiving a monthly paycheck just as her teachers did! By the time she began high school, she was not only working as the step team instructor (as well as leading the step team at her high school), but she began to realize her true love for education by volunteering at her church’s after school tutoring program. Perhaps it was the fact that Karly comes from a family of educators… or maybe it was how she would light up when she would see the eager faces of her students waiting for their tutoring session. This was the beginning of Karly’s realization that she wanted a career in education.

Although Karly grew up on the west coast, she had her sights set on attending an HBCU. Hearing stories about attending Fisk University from her mother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, the choice was pretty obvious for Karly. She visited Fisk while in high school, and immediately knew at that moment she wanted to become a part of the Fisk family. She enrolled at Fisk where she graduated with a degree in History with a concentration in Secondary Education. While in college, Karly fell in love with the South and decided to make Nashville her new home. She began her teaching career at Gra-Mar Middle School and while there, enrolled in TSU where she graduated with a Master of Education degree in Administration and Supervision. Karly taught in Nashville for six years and is currently in her tenth year, where she teaches English courses in Florida to adults new to America. 

And just when you thought she couldn’t have any more similarities with Dorian, Karly also, grew up in a "Greek household". Everywhere she turned there was crimson, and there was cream! Karly continued the tradition becoming a 4th generation Delta. Karly loves spending time with her family and friends, best friend and love -- Dorian, traveling, reading, eating southern foods, and reminiscing and reliving her dancing days.
